Policies regarding data usage and privacy
TL;DR The overall principle is:
- to only collect the data required to perform the purpose of the website,
- to only use it for those purposes, and
- to not share it with third parties where it can be reasonably avoided.
Data collected
Data collected includes:
- Display name, email address and avatar URL from your nominated authentication provider
- The school you register to participate with
- Solutions you provide to competitions you particpate in
Data sharing
Within the platform
- If you provide consent in your preferences, your name may be listed on the public leaderboards.
- If you join a school team, the team coordinator will have access to your name, email address, avatar, number of problems completed, and date of last login for the purposes of managing the team membership.
- If you create/coordinate a school team, your name will be shown to people when they nominate to join your school team. Your email address will also be provided to team members once you accept their entry into the team.
Third parties
- Authentication provider - Your choosen provider (eg: Google, Github, etc) will know that you have used their service to sign in to our server.
- Advertising - We do not have advertising services / ad networks connected to our website/server.
- Analytics - We do not use an analytics service such as Google Analytics.
- Mail provider - We use a mail provider to manage sending of emails to ensure our emails don't get caught by spam filters. The current service for this is Mailgun.
- Server hosting - We host the website on a cloud server rented from Digital Ocean.
Data inspection/correction
- The main personal data stored is name, email address, avatar and school. With the exception of your school, these are obtained from your authentication provider and are automatically updated each time you sign-in.
- Various operational data is generated as you use the service. Examples include points earned, problems completed, achievements unlocked.
- As per GDPR, if you wish to obtain a copy of your data to inspect or request correction, please contact me through the mechanisms below.
Data retention
- As the competition has an annual keynote event, and with participation expected to occur over subsequent years, data is expected to be stored for several years. Competitors will be able to continue building on their achievements/points through multi year participation.
- 2022 is the first year of this project, so this policy will likely be refined, but it is anticipated that after a couple of years of non-participation an assumption will be made that the participant has graduated/left the school and their data will then be deleted.
Data removal
- If you wish to have your account deleted, please contact me through the mechanisms below. This will mean if you sign up again, all points/achievements previously earned will be gone. It also means your school loses the points earnt by you which may affect their ranking.
